Part two of our gaming special featuring Rob and Perrin from www.stage-clear.co.uk and Rich and Jamie from www.gamewank.com.

In this second hour, we carry on with some discussion on what we are all playing at the moment then move onto a topical wee chat on the best bost battles ever.

Big thanks again to the lads and hopefully one of those sets of reprobates will host the rest of us some point soon.

Audio Podcast 35 - SonicsClearWank Part One

(download)

Part one of a gaming special and this one really does deserve the title 'special'. Myself and Iain are very pleased to host the talents of the comic geniuses Jamie Trinca and Rich Morgan (@gamewank and @spaceman_ric) from the Gamewank podcast (www.gamewank.com).

And as if that wasn't enough, Rob Fahey and Richard Perrin (@robfahey and @perrinashcroft) from the the podcast with all the industry journalistic insight, the frankly awesome Stage Clear (www.stage-clear.co.uk).

This shoot rapidly ran to two hours but it really is a cracker so rather than edit it too much, I've split it into two parts. In this part you are going to hear us discuss some of the latest gaming news as well as some of the games we have been taking the time to play. Enjoy!

Audio Podcast 34 - Journalism

(download)

Whisper it - this week's show may actually contain actual journalism! Also, standby for an exciting announcement for next week's show. This week Iain and I cover the following;

Inglourious Basterds

Defying Gravity

Batman: Arkham Asylum
Edinburgh Interactive Festival

Criminal: Coward

EIF 2009 - Ian Livingstone

As promised yesterday here is the second QnA session I recorded at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival 2009.

This is with Ian Livingstone, and like yesterday it is mostly myself and PS3 Attitude doing the questioning.

Ian Livingstone is a childhood hero of mine and many others my age. He wrote the Fighting Fantasy 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books that were a big part of my childhood as well as founding Games Workshop and White Dwarf magazine. He is currently Life President of Eidos (Tomb Raider, Championship Manager, Hitman, etc) and sits as a member of the aquisition board.

All these things are discussed in the QnA along with Fighting Fantasy on iPhone, new FF hardcopy book, Tomb Raider - both Games and Movies, Batman : Arkham Asylum and licensed IPs v's original IPs, Edinburgh Interactive, Board Games/Tabletop RPGs, new Hitman game, Minininjas, motion-sensing technology ie. Natal and ... DEUS EX 3 !!!

Little bit of trivia I learned in a one-on-one with him before the QnA - He has a boardgame group that meets every 10 days that includes Steve Jackson and Peter Molyneux!

EIF 2009 - Chris Deering

I (Iain/Mentazm) am just back from spending two days at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival 2009. The show has been running for 6 years and I managed to sit in on a group QnA session with the organiser of EIF, Chris Deering.

Chris is best known as being CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe from 1995 to 2005. He is currently retired but sits as Chairman of Codemasters amongst other projects.

Here he talks on Sony's PS3 'Home' project, the EIF in general, the EIF's role in the industry and where how he see's the show evolving in the future.

This is the first of two audio QnAs. The audio quality on this one isn't great as my recorder was being held in my hand a distance from Chris, but I have boosted the volume and it is listenable and has some interesting stuff in it. I will be posting the Ian Livingstone QnA tomorrow which is jam packed full of stuff, and is much better quality.

A guy from PS3 Attitude and myself dominated the QnAs btw, hardly anyone else asked any questions. On this recording you can hear me as I'm much louder than the other speakers.

I will be talking on the next podcast about what games I saw and played, the presentations I heard and the show in general.

(download)

What an episode! With the awesome Richard Brunton joining us from www.filmstalker.co.uk, it was an easy call to make this week's show a movie special. Before we knew it though, our tongues ran away with us so we've split a 90 minute episode into part 1 and 2. Part 1 covers the following;

Reviews:

GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra
Antichrist
Mesrine

Trailers:

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
Solomon Kane

Big thanks to Richard - get him added to your twitter - @filmstalker and @filmstalkers

Places to go, people to see...

I've been meaning to write this article for a wee while so I'm going to get it done right now before I fire through my stack of comics for Sunday. There are a helluva a lot of podcasts and websites which I find myself visiting week by week and have a huge influence on sonicsring. If you are stupid enough to like our general lack of knowledge and poor excuse for humour, you are going to love these guys. Just make sure you come back after doing the tour!

First up is Stage Clear. Perrin Ashcroft and Rob Fahey have been nurturing this cracking wee video games podcast since the start of the year. What separates them from the rest of the pack is the inside line on what is happening in the industry (Rob is a games journalist, Perrin, a game developer) and the sharp, biting wit which they choose to unleash on one another and their audience. Season one finished a few weeks back but season two is due to start very, very soon so get them added to your iTunes weekly schedule.

Next up is the rather superb Gamewank. Ric and Jamie are a pair of reprobates who really shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a microphone yet once a month they do exactly that. The forthcoming mix of video game reviews, discussion and sketches makes for me, the funniest gaming podcast out there by a mile. Joyous, irreverent stuff.

A lot of projects were heavily influenced and encouraged from the Consolevania forum not least of which was sonicsring. Another new site has sprung forth from a couple of Antipodean lads, Rob and Logan with the rather charming Up, Up, Down, Down-ers. Offering a mix of gaming opinion and plenty of hilariously well-edited videos. Very, very excited to see what the lads do with this site in the coming months.

For those of you more interested in film news rather than video games, you need to check out all the up-to-the-minute movie news Richard Brunton compiles on his site Filmstalker. Having had him as a guest on the podcast this weekend, I can tell you that he is the kind of person I desperately want to hate but can't - funny and knowledgeable with that rare ability of passing on that knowledge while never being boring. Damn you and your silky tongue, Richard!

Few other quick mentions… One Life Left is another show which I have discovered recently as recommended by Perrin from Stage Clear. Ste, Simon and Ann skillfully maneuver us around the weekly gaming news whilst keeping everything lighthearted and fun. You can find the podcast of their weekly Resonance 104 radio show here. Finally, it would be remiss of me to not mention what Rab Florence formerly of Consolevania is doing now. Along with his writing partner Iain Connell, they run the hilarious www.connellandflorence.com which has new content up there pretty much daily.
